What does it matter?
Anytime we live contrary to reality, we experience the negative consequences. If, for example, you try to ignore the reality of gravity by walking off a cliff, you will hurt yourself or even die. If you disregard the realities of physical health, you will consume things that do not effectively nourish and replenish your body and you’ll get sick more often. If you ignore traffic laws, you will eventually injure yourself and likely hurt others in the process. Similarly, if there is, in fact, a God who made us and yet we live with no regard for Him, then our souls will be ever-restless, our desires and thoughts skewed, and our journey through this one life we are given, empty and wasted.
the reality is …
There is a God. And He knows and loves us more perfectly and deeply than anyone else has or ever will. His love for us compelled Him to do everything needed to rescue us from “the domain of darkness” which so obviously infects and afflicts humanity (Colossians 1:13). This darkness is evidenced in things like our lack of compassion for one another, our greed, envy, hatred, worry, body-image disorders, racism, perverted sexual desires, broken vows and promises, anxiety, and a host of other things we all suffer from and experience.
But God has made it possible for us to be “reborn” (John, chapter 3) or filled with the power that comes from his Holy Spirit to rule over the present darkness (Romans, chapter 8) and escape eternal destruction (2 Thessalonians 1:9). It is described in Ezekiel 36:26 as a spiritual heart transplant where God promises to remove our hearts of stone and replace them with hearts of flesh and a new spirit.
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you;
I will remove from you your heart of stone
and give you a heart of flesh.

In John 3:14-15 Jesus said,
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.“

Jesus was describing his upcoming crucifixion and comparing it to when God had saved the Israelites in the past from a plague of poisonous snakes. In that story (found in the book of Numbers, chapter 21), anyone bitten by a snake was healed when they looked upon the bronze replica of a snake that Moses had been commanded by God to put on a pole and lift up for everyone to see. Similarly, all who look to Jesus by faith (“believes in Him”) to save them from the dominion of darkness are rescued from it. As Colossians 1:13 words it, we are “transferred… to the kingdom of his beloved Son.”
In other words, if you desire the peace and order in your soul that comes from being reconciled to God, then respond to his love for you. Ask Him to do the heart transplant He promises for everyone who looks to Him to save them from their sinful desires.
This journey can start right now for you with a simple, heartfelt prayer to our Maker. It can be something as simple as this:
“God, I need you to rescue me from the darkness of my soul and my sinful desires. Please remove this heart of stone and replace it with a heart of flesh, putting your Holy Spirit within me so that I can seek to wholeheartedly follow you and your good ways. I want to experience you and the fruit (Galatians 5:22-23) that comes from walking in righteousness with You ”.
